Tonga Islands

A Map of the Tonga Islands.  Engraved for Constable's Miscellany by Chas. Thomson Edinburgh, Sept. 15th 1827.  Measures about 5.5" x 9", shows The Hapai Islands, Hafooloo How, Eooa, Tonga and many others.  Four folds and the left side (about 3/4" is somewhat wrinkled, some foxing and darkening.  This group of islands is also know as the Friendly Islands - an archipelago about 200 miles long in the south west central Pacific Ocean East of Fiji contains about 150 islands and islets divided into three groups - Tongatabu, Vavau and Haabai.  The map mentions and shows the presence of a small volcano on the island of Tofooa.  The islands were first discovered in 1606 by two Dutch navigators and visited by Captain Cook in 1773 and 1777.                                                                                      $60

Russia / Bering Sea / Alaska

The Northern Archipelago or New Discover’d Islands in the Seas of Kamtschatka & Anadir.  Engraved by T. Bowen, published by London Magazine, 1775.  Border, cartouche and coastlines outlined in color.  Shows the area bordering what is now the Bering Sea and Bering Strait including Kamtschatka peninsula, Alaschka Island, Aleutian Islands, and the western tip of what is now Alaska.  Measures about 8.5”x 10”.                                       $240

Russia / Bering Sea / Cook’s Third Voyage

Carte de L’entrée de Norton et du Detroit de Behring.  Drawn by M. Rigobert Bonne, published in Paris, 1788.  This map is from the Atlas Encyclopedique (plate 130) by Bonne & Demarest and shows Cook’s third voyage to the northern regions (1776 – 1780). His locations and dates in this area are plotted on the map.  Handcolored with water outlined in blue, the coasts outlined in red with pale green on the land masses, compass rose in red and yellow.  Shows both sides of the Bering Strait – Oriental Partie de L’Asie and Occidental Partie de l’Amerique.                                                                                                                     $275
